The Ultimate Guide to Palm-Oil Free Toner

A staple skin care item of ours, toners and astringents seem like an innocuous purchase. Their composition is often basic enough: some kind of alcohol, maybe witch hazel or rose water, plus fragrance or essence. So, what's the problem?

Glycerin. Commonly derived from palm-oil, if spotted it is best to discuss the origin of this ingredient with the company selling your product. If your toner claims to do a little more, like stave off wrinkles or brighten skin, then you may have to be mindful of say, retinyl palmitate or lauric acid esters. Basically, toners need a little homework. So, while you're waiting to hear back on the status of your favorite drugstore mist, perhaps choose a conflict free bottle from one of the 15 brands below:

πŸ’¦ Marble & Milkweed | $16-20 | This NYC-based shop offers several different toners (some on sale!) but the one to mention would be the Rose + Tulsi Facial Tonic. We love drinking tulsi tea and a spritz of this before our morning cup sounds amazing! For all skin types.

πŸ’¦ Fanciful Fox | $9 | One of our all time favorite toners, the Blemish Buster is affordable and, most importantly, it is great at treating breakouts. If this sells out quick, don't worry. The Super Clean Facial Toner is wonderful too, with cucumber and green tea extract and jojoba proteins. Recommended for dry and normal skin types.

πŸ’¦ Captain Blankenship | $24 | This Aloe & Rose Toner is special because of white willow extract, a natural source of salicylic acid. One part treatment, one part soothing agent, with the help of uplifting rose and lemongrass. For all skin types.

πŸ’¦ Soul Sunday | $16-26 | With a chic and minimalist design, Soul Sunday provides a cruelty-free toner that will look beautiful on any bureau. The formula for their Gentle Toner only contains four ingredients–clary sage, witch hazel, geranium, and aloe–and is perfect for troubled and sensitive skin. Note: Don't reach for their Rice Water just yet; that variety has glycerin and we are still trying to verify whether it is palm-oil free or not.

πŸ’¦ Herbivore | $16-32 | While this cult all-natural brand is not known for being palm-free, you can rest easy knowing that their Rose Hibiscus coconut water toner is AOK. This hydrating mist contains zero glycerin and prides itself on just a handful of vegan ingredients, including fermented radish root, aloe vera, and witch hazel. For all skin types.

πŸ’¦ Harlow | $17~ | This Canadian-based brand boasts three botanical toners for all skin types: Darling, Cherish, and Treasure. Pick up a bottle of Treasure for its dark and enchanting scent profile, which features both neroli and rose geranium. Any of these can be used as a toner, a mist, and according to Harlow, a setting spray.

πŸ’¦ Urban Oreganics | $18 | Use this rosewater toner after cleansing and before moisturizing -- the gentle rosewater, acv, and lemon based formula will wipe away any impurities. For all skin types. Check their instagram for weekly coupon codes and flash sales.

πŸ’¦ Meow Meow Tweet | $5-24 | One of our go-to brands, MMT does not disappoint with its skin care line. This particular Face Toner is unique because it contains wild harvested witch hazel, apple cider vinegar, and palmarosa cedar. Available in a travel size, too! For all skin types.

πŸ’¦ Yoshimomo | $34-48 | This luxury brand offers a mix of toners that work over time in the anti-aging and skin brightening departments. For example, their Alpha-Beta toner utilizes bio-derived Alpha Hydroxy fruit acids to gently and naturally resurface your skin and manage hyperpigmentation. Best for normal, oily, and combination skin.

πŸ’¦ Zabana Essentials | $13 | This toner is an awesome 2-in-1, functioning as both a face and body spray. Mist throughout the day for quick relief or use with a cotton pad to wipe away impurities. This brand offers two scents: Lavender lemongrass and Citron Blossom. For all skin types.

πŸ’¦ Wildcare | $18 | This California-based company creates hydrosols inspired by the great natural beauty of their surroundings, resulting in ultra West Coast-y varieties like Ojai White Sage and Palo Santo. The brand even claims that daily use of these ethically-sourced mists will restore your skin's natural PH. For all skin types.

πŸ’¦ Beridan Naturals | $24 | These four toning mists are made without the use of preservatives or artificial colors. Our favorite might be the Moonstone varietal - its galactic hue (and scent) is from blue yarrow. The Rosewater is another standout, which calms the skin with rose and aloe, and is colored with hibiscus flowers. For all skin types.

πŸ’¦ Earth tu Face | $58 | The California brand's handmade Toning Mist refreshes skin with a mix of soothing botanicals like lavender and rose geranium. It can also be used to set make-up! A splurge-worthy item. For all skin types.

πŸ’¦ Fat & the Moon | $10 | This Sage & Rose Face Mist utilizes four basic but powerful ingredients to calm down skin and refresh the pores. Clary sage acts as a mild astringent and jojoba oil moisturizes the skin. All-natural and preservative free. For all skin types.

πŸ’¦ Good 4 You | $7-28 | This shop offers a wide array of natural toners, most of which contain ingredients that are locally foraged in Massachusetts. Nearly all of these stand-out herbal-floral combinations also come in beautifully illustrated boxes. Our favorite? The Queen Anne's Lace, for sensitive, mature, and/or normal skin. If you can't choose just one, you can get a beautiful set of seven mini's for $64.
