Mixtape: Inaugurate This!
Where will you be this Inauguration Day? I've teetered back and forth on whether I will take an action in my city or sever myself from this terrible circus completely by staying in bed all day. Whether you're road tripping to the Women's March on Washington or curling up in a ball—with a drink—we'd like to lift you up with 16 of our favorite female-led songs, hand-picked by our lovably radical staff. Channel these artist's strength, love, and uncompromising attitudes this January 20th—dance around your living room with daring, visionary friends in defiance of the status quo or indulge in sadness on the couch, by yourself. Whatever vibe you want to create, we've got you covered.
The playlist starts out with "Erase You" (by 1980's South Bronx band ESG), a funky post-punk anthem that makes me feel like rising up no matter what is going on with my life. There are more riot grrrl pre-cursors, like The Slits, and classics like Le Tigre and Sleater-Kinney. The playlist morphs from post-punk to pop and hip hop with Lizzo, Ms. Lauryn Hill, and Salt-N-Pepa's "None of Your Business"—one of the most relevant tracks on the list, I'd argue. Modern pop-rock icons like No Doubt and Lady Gaga make an appearance before the playlist's soulful, folk end with Dusty Springfield, Sharon Jones, and finally Odetta.
